Lake City, MN April 1, 2019 – Lake City, MN announced today that it is finalizing plans to annex Rochester, their nearby neighbor to the South. According to City Leaders; while Rochester has developed into a “World Class Medical Center” with an International Airport, it does NOT have any natural bodies of water to provide for recreation, trade and travel. In contrast, Lake City is perched on the shores of Lake Pepin, the largest and most scenic natural Lake on the entire length of the Mississippi River, a navigable waterway with access to all of the major ports in the World.
Many Rochester citizens and visitors to the Mayo Clinic frequent Lake City to enjoy the abundant shoreline, amenities and breathtaking views of Lake Pepin. The Mayo Brothers often spent idyllic summer afternoons enjoying the Lake on their motor yacht. It only seems fitting that a community with a World Class Medical Center and historical ties to the World Class Lake Pepin should all be part of the same greater community. In order to accomplish this natural union and provide Rochester its deserved claim of being associated with Lake Pepin, Lake City has agreed to annex Rochester into what will be termed “the Greater Lake City Region”. It is anticipated that Rochester will maintain its own identity and local government, becoming a Borough of Greater Lake City. In return, Lake City will receive complete rights to use Rochester’s International Airport and to proclaim that the airport is part of the newly formed Regional metropolis.
While the formal annexation may take a few years to complete, the residents of Rochester are encouraged to immediately proclaim that they now belong to the “Greater Lake City Region” and to spend time experiencing the delightful shores and waters of what is now their very own “beautiful Lake Pepin”.
