Locals and tourists are encouraged to take photos with The Giant Water Skis and share in our city’s history
Lake City, Mn. May 21, 2019 -The Lake City Tourism Bureau is proud to announce the display of the excitingly enlarged replica of Ralph Samuelson’s first-ever crafted water skis. The display went up in Lake City, Minnesota on April 1st and will remain available for viewing and photo ops through the end of October. The Tourism Bureau invites everyone to experience and share this new addition to the town’s commemorative display of water sport history.
To recognize Lake City’s proud birthright as the ‘Birthplace of Water Skiing’ a number of donors, the majority of which were individuals, funded the construction of The Giant Water Skis. The 150lb display is a visually accurate replica, apart from it’s entrancingly enlarged size, of the first water skis ever crafted by Ralph Samuelson. Known as “The Father of Water Skiing”, Samuelson is a beloved figure among locals and tourists for his creation of the sport and the impact he continued to have on water sports across America.
Northern Toboggan Co, a family business located in Warroad, Mn that crafts toboggan sleds, was asked to build The Giant Skis in 2018 because of their expertise in crafting curved wooden sports equipment.
The Giant Water Skis are located close to the waters of Lake Pepin, the lake that toted Samuelson’s first ever water ski attempts. The Giant Skis were crafted in 2018 after The Lake City Chamber of Commerce, several businesses and many individuals donated to the project.
The owner of the skis hopes to display them in the middle of town during Lake City’s highly attended Water Ski Days on the 28th, 29th and 30th of June, 2019. The annual event is a highly attended celebration of everything water skiing and the perfect time to capture a photo in front of The Giant Skis. Visitors are highly encouraged to share their photo op with the display on social media with the hashtag #GiantWaterSkis.
The mission of the Lake City Tourism Bureau is to promote and position Lake City, Minnesota as a premier leisure tourism destination. Lake City is nestled along the banks of Lake Pepin and the Mississippi River and surrounded by scenic bluffs, creating a beautifully quaint visit in all four seasons.
