Sea WingSea Wing

In July of 1890 an excursion boat named the Sea Wing capsized on Lake Pepin. 98 people lost their lives in the disaster.

The "Great Fire" of 1882 devastated virtually the entire downtown, an area of over six square blocks.

Bathing BeachOhuta Park

Ohuta Park was once the site of a grain loading and storage elevator, until 1920 when the Doughy family donated it to the City for park purposes. In 1957 the park was extended to include the swimming beach.  Ohuta is a Native American word meaning “where land and water meet”

Steamboat Verana on Lake PepinMississippi Steamboats

Beginning in 1853, Lake City became a popular stopping point along Lake Pepin for Mississippi Steamboats; the city was formally established in 1872.

Pepie The Pepin Monster

Pepie The Lake Pepin MonsterOn April 28, 1871 "a lake monster is seen swimming in Lake Pepin". Since then, many people have reported sightings of an unidentified creature surfacing from the depths of Lake Pepin. The locals have given this shy and elusive creature a name; Pepie.
